The studio-home of sculptor Sauro Cavallini, who died during summer 2016, will be open for visits. Situated on the hill of Fiesole amid olive groves and ancient trees, over 300 sculptures remain to tell the story of Cavallini’s artistic parabola.

Autoritratto CavalliniFrom February, the studio will open by appointment for anyone who wants to know more about the creative force of this artist who was born in 1927 in La Spezia, but was active in Florence from the end of the 1950s. There are several works of his in the city, strategically positioned in the garden of Palazzo degli Affari in the area of the convention centre, in the gardens of Piazza Ferrucci, in front of the Rai television building, at Villa Favard and near the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte.

His best known work at the international level is the Monument to Life, a bronze statue of 3 metres height positioned in front of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

Cavallini worked mainly on sculpture and many of his works are positioned in the park at his house in Fiesole. Inside, there are many small bronzes and graphic works, the fruit of his late years when he worked indoors because of his health. The prints and works are in colour and document all of his endeavours.
Cavallini was an active participant on the Italian cultural scene from post-WWII. Recent documents by his children, mainly newspaper articles, reveal his generous commitment and technical prowess from November 1966, when in the days following the flood, young people rushed to volunteer to aid Florence and its artistic heritage.

Sauro Cavallini, an artist in his late 30s at the time, dedicated months to cleaning sculptures that had been stained and disfigured by the waters, first at the Bargello and later at the Basilica of Santa Croce, experimenting with innovative techniques.

The visits will take place on the first and on the third Sunday of the month from 2.30pm to 6.30 pm; booking is required.
