Founded in Cerreto Guidi is Mumeloc, the Museum of Local Memory. It tells the present and future generations about life in the Fucecchio Marshes and the Nazi massacre that took place here in August 1944.

il museo mumelocThis museum does not display objects but gathers testimonials: interviews, photographs, memories, pieces of life that must not be forgotten.
The Museum tells an audience of citizens, students - and why not- tourists too, the story of a wetland, the Padule (Marshes) , which for centuries have been very important as a center of activity and a source of livelihood.
In the darkest periods of the Second World War, the Padule was chosen by many as a safe haven and, unfortunately, because of its treacherous nature was assessed by the German army to be a hiding place or partisan base.
Hence the actual manhunt that broke out on August 23, 1944 and took 175 victims. Only 69 of these were men of military age, while the others slaughtered were children, women, and the elderly.
The City of Cerreto Guidi and the Tuscany Region wanted to create the Museum to promote the protection and enhancement of local cultural heritage, to tell the world about its historical roots, its human experience and development prospects.
It also offers educational activities directed at schools, with the aim of enabling students and teachers to deal directly not so much with history with a capital H, as with its traces: testimonials, sources, documents, which can then be reworked independently experimenting with the practices and tools of historical research.
